Mastering Lithium: We know it inside out

About Lithium batteries and their fire risks

SAFE AND POWERFUL, BUT HANDLE WITH CARE

Lithium-ion batteries are generally safe when used properly, but they can become dangerous if damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to extreme temperatures. Understanding the risks and following proper safety guidelines can significantly reduce the likelihood of a fire or explosion.

Lithium-ion battery fires, also known as “thermal runaway” events, are a significant safety concern due to their potentially explosive nature. On this page you can find a breakdown of how they start, the phases involved, the risks, and how they can be avoided.

Two billion lithium battery cells are produced every year.

How a Lithium-Ion Fire Starts

Lithium-ion fires typically start due to a phenomenon called thermal runaway. This occurs when the battery’s internal temperature rises uncontrollably, leading to a fire or explosion. The key causes are:

Overcharging

When a lithium-ion battery is charged beyond its safe voltage limit, it can cause the electrolyte to break down and generate heat.

Production failure

On every 1 in 10 million cells, there is a production failure, causing a variety of issues and sometimes leading to fire.

Physical Damage

Mechanical damage (like puncturing or crushing the battery) can create internal short circuits, leading to overheating.

Short Circuits

Internal or external short circuits can cause a rapid discharge of energy, leading to overheating.

High Temperatures
Exposure to high environmental temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions inside the battery, leading to overheating.

Phases of a Lithium-Ion Fire:

Lithium-ion battery fires progress through several stages:

Phase 1: the Initial Trigger (Overheating, Short Circuit or Damage):
An event, such as overcharging or physical damage, causes the battery’s temperature to rise rapidly.

Phase 2: Thermal Runaway:
As the battery heats up, the electrolyte (the chemical inside the battery) begins to decompose, generating flammable gases. This increases pressure inside the battery, potentially causing it to rupture. The heat causes other parts of the battery to catch fire or explode. These gasses can be detected by our Liiontamer Gas detection system.

Phase 3: Gas Emission:
The breakdown of materials inside the battery releases gases (e.g., hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide), which are highly flammable. These gases can ignite, intensifying the fire.

Phase 4: Explosion (in severe cases):
If the battery casing ruptures due to internal pressure buildup, the release of gases can lead to a fireball or explosion. The speed of the explosion is with the same speed as a bullet from a fire arm.

The risks of Lithium fires

Did You Know?

High Energy Release:
Lithium-ion fires burn extremely hot, with temperatures potentially exceeding 1,000°C (1,832°F).
Toxic Fumes:
When lithium-ion batteries burn, they release toxic gases, such as hydrogen fluoride, which can pose significant health risks if inhaled.
Re-ignition:
Even after a lithium-ion battery fire appears to be extinguished, it can re-ignite hours or even days later if the battery cells have not fully cooled down or been neutralized.
Difficulty in Extinguishing:
Water is often ineffective for fighting lithium-ion battery fires. Special fire extinguishers, such as Class D (for metal fires) are more effective.
